Christmas meme

But first this:

funny pictures of cats with captions
more animals

I got this from the fabulous blog of Smariek Knits:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper
2. Real tree or Artificial? Usually none, and the Force of Nature will draw one on paper and tape it to the piano. However this year I have a sour orange tree that lives outside during the warm weather and now it’s inside. The Force of Nature has decided it is suitable, has hung several ornaments on it and pronounced it our Christmas tree.
3. When do you put up the tree? N/A
4. When do you take the tree down? N/A
5. Do you like eggnog? yes, but only the homemade non-alcoholic kind. Studmuffin and the kids like storebought…which tastes like glue to me.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? Probably the Laura Ingalls Wilder books my grandmother gave me every year.
7. Hardest person to buy for? Studmuffin; he doesn’t really *get* the whole gift giving thing…..
8. Easiest person to buy for? The kids.
9. Do you have a nativity scene? No.
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? A few of both
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? The year I got absolutely no gifts for my birthday or Christmas (my birthday is on the 13th) from husband or kids….after busting my but to do everything for everyone else.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? It’s a 4 -way tie: The Bishop’s Wife (with Cary Grant), Holiday Inn (which I hardly ever get to see), Muppets Christmas Carol(if you haven’t seen it, you MUST!), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (with Jim Carrey). I only saw that last one 2 years ago and I just adore it. Bill Murray’s Scrooged is a close runner up; Bobcat Goldthwait is SO funny in this movie….
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Whenever I see something that I think will serve, but we do Christmas pretty small so usually the bulk of the presents shopping is done about a week before. Shopping for the Christmas dinner takes much more time.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Oh yes. I would much rather give a gift to someone else who will love it than to store it unused in my all-too-cluttered house or throw it away (Horrors!).
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Christmas cookies.
16. Lights on the tree? No.
17. Favorite Christmas song? That changes just about daily with me! See the last two posts for a sampling.
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Staying home.
19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Of COURSE! Dasher Dancer Prancer Vixen Comet Cupid Donner Blitzen and Rudolph….though I love the Ray Stevens’ song “Santa Claus is Watchin’ You” where he renames the reindeer: Bruce Marvin Slick Clyde Doright and Leon.
20. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? In the morning. Growing up we always did it Christmas Eve which I prefer, but Studmuffin insists upon the morning so….
21. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? The hysterical crazy over commercialization of Christmas in the U.S. Last year I was in British Columbia for a few days before Christmas and it was really really nice and relaxed…even charming. If it wasn’t so cold, I might emigrate.
22. Favorite ornament theme or color? I love snowflakes.
23. What do you want for Christmas this year? Peace on earth
24. Angel on the tree top or a star? Neither
25. Favorite Christmas dinner? One I do not personally have to cook. :o)

Ten Most Favorite Movie Songs

I thought, “This will be easy….”  and that was 3 hours ago.  I’ma have to divide this into several categories and call these:

First I was thinking in this direction:

  1. Institutionalized – Suicidal Tendencies – “Repo Man”….Talk about capturing the zeitgeist of the moment!
  2. Ain’t Nobody – Chaka Khan – “Breakin'”….This was a sort of a forgettable breakdancing movie – tho’ the dancing was mostly terrific and Ice T is in it, the acting and the story weren’t fab.  What folks DON’T remember is that this monster tour de force of Chaka’s came from the rather excellent soundtrack. Almost this whole song is in the movie and it accompanies a rather tedious “teaching Kelly to dance” sequence.
  3. Try A Little Tenderness – Otis Redding – “Pretty in Pink”….watch the video and feel the love.
  4. Fight the Power – Public Enemy – “Do the Right Thing”….Another zeitgeist moment.
  5. The Banana Boat Song – Harry Belafonte – “Beetlejuice”
  6. His Eye Is On the Sparrow – Tanya Blount & Lauryn Hill – “Sister Act 2″…They totally blew the top of this song; a just-before-the-Fugees-hit Lauryn Hill has a big part in the movie.
  7. You got a friend in me – Randy Newman – “Toy Story”
  8. I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow – Dan Tyminski -“O Brother Where Are Thou”
  9. Boys Are Back In Town – Thin Lizzy – “A Knight’s Tale”…I started to laugh when I watched the film – I just couldn’t believe they put it in there…it was perfect.    Slide to 1:39 for the clip
  10. Bright Side of Life – Eric Idle – “The Life of Brian”
  11. Tequila – The Champs – “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure”…His last request before the bikers kill him…
  12. As Time Goes By – Dooley Wilson – “Casablanca”
  13. Why – Annie Lennox – “Boys on the Side”…This song is a masterpiece – the whole soundtrack is pretty good and so was the movie…but it could have been great.  It had such potential. :::sigh:::
  14. Oh Yeah – Yello – “The Secret of My Success” & “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”
  15. Slide to 1:40 miss the set-up and just hear the song.

  16. Canned Heat – Jamiroquai – “Napoleon Dynamite”
  17. Lose Yourself – Eminem – “8 Mile”

Then I started thinking about:

  1. The Entertainer – “the Sting”
  2. Rock ‘n’ Roll High School – the Ramones – “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School”
  3. Rock Around the Clock – Bill Haley & the Comets – “Blackboard Jungle”
  4. Born To Be Wild – Steppenwolf – “Easy Rider”
  5. Do You Know Where You’re Going To? -Diana Ross -“Mahogany”
  6. Ode to Billie Joe – Bobbie Gentry – “Ode to Billie Joe”
  7. Evergreen -Barbra Streisand – “A Star Is Born”
  8. Live and Let Die – Paul McCartney,  Goldfinger- Shirley Bassey, Nobody Does It Better – Carly Simon – James Bond 007 movies
  9. Ghostbusters – Ray Parker Jr. – “Ghostbusters”
  10. Up Where We Belong – Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes – “An Officer & A Gentleman”

But then I said, “Wait a minute.  What about…?”

  1. THE SOUND OF MUSIC -“Edelweiss”, Do Re Mi”, “So Long, Farewell”
  2. THE WIZARD OF OZ -“Over the Rainbow”, “If I Only Had A Brain”
  3. SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN – “Singin’ In the Rain”, “Good Morning”
  4. THE WIZ- “Ease On Down the Road”, “Don’t Give Me No Bad News”
  6. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW – “Sweet Transvestite”,”Time Warp”
  7. ALADDIN – “I Can Show You The World”, “One Jump Ahead” (and THE LITTLE MERMAID & THE LION KING)
  9. TOMMY – “Pinball Wizard”
  11. HAIR – “Three Five Zero Zero”, “Easy to Be Hard”, “Frank Mills”

Which led me to:

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Good the Bad & the Ugly
  3. Life as a House – Mark Isham is a bloomin’ genius.
  4. The Pianist
  5. Amadeus – How can you go wrong with Mozart?
  6. Harry Potter
  7. 2001: A Space Odyssey – Not only was Strauss a genius, so was Stanley Kubrick.  I still get chills every time I hear the main theme.
  8. Pink Panther – Henry Mancini – I cannot think of any piece of music that evokes as immediate a mood as this does.
  9. Life Is Beautiful – Not as well known, but truly lovely.
  10. Schindler’s List
  11. Shakespeare In Love

SOME HONORABLE MENTIONS (or stuff that doesn’t fit into the above categories)

  • BLUE VELVET – Angelo Badlamenti at his weird best.  Throw in Bobby Vinton and the most surreal placement of Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams”, it’s simply unnerving.
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas – Both Danny Elfman’s and Tim Burton’s masterwork IMO.
  • 10 Things I Hate About You – Pure fun.
  • Dr. Zhivago – “Somewhere My Love” definitely evokes a mood, but the costumes and the musical arrangments appear very dated to me now.
  • Purple Rain & Batman – Prince is beyond a genius; he’s from another galaxy.
  • The Decline Of Western Civilization – American punk from way before Nirvana.
  • Chariots of Fire & Axel F both win for overexposure.

Now you might think…..

…that I’ve just been posting memes to get out of writing real posts and in a way, you’d be right. I haven’t lots of happy fun stuff to talk about and even though I’m usually delighted to spew bile all over you, my faithful reader, I’m strangely reluctant to do so right now. Don’t worry; this too shall pass. But I did come across a most excellent meme last night and I wanted to share it, even though I just shared a meme.

The VGT Omnivore’s Hundred:

“Below is a list of 100 things that I think every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life. The list includes fine food, strange food, everyday food and even some pretty bad food – but a good omnivore should really try it all. Don’t worry if you haven’t, mind you; neither have I, though I’ll be sure to work on it. Don’t worry if you don’t recognize everything in the hundred, either; Wikipedia has the answers.

Here’s what I want you to do:

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment at linking to your results.”

In hopes of….

"How do you solve a problem like....?"

….winning more yarn (because the latest stash enhancements have only fueled the obsession…), I decided to enthrall y’all with a meme – oh, yes, I know what yer thinking:  “Yay!  More minutia about Helen!  Just what I need!”  (Actually, I was reading my friend Sarah’s blog and that how I heard about it).

Knittyotter is having a contest (deadline to enter is Saturday, 7/19/08).

Getting to Know you Contest Questionnaire:

1.) How long have you been knitting?

My grammy taught me when I was 7 or 8.  Since I’m 39, that’s over thirty years.  One would think there might be more output to show for all those years, but I have a sort-of excuse.  I stopped knitting for a long time after I moved from New England (terribly, awfully, horribly, soul-stealingly cold) to the South (wonderful, warm, hot n’ humid, thank You God).  SInce I was used to knitting mostly very cheap or icky  hot woolen yarn,  it never occurred to me that there would be wonderful yarns to make things suitable for here.  Yes friends and neighbors, my excuse is a lack of imagination on my part.

2.) How long have you been knitting socks?

I’ve almost no idea.  I made a few pair of lovely woolen “ski socks” – some even nice enough to give away…maybe 20 years ago?

3.) What do you do with a problem like Maria?

Beatings. Repeatedly and with malice.

4.) What is your all time favorite sock yarn?

Usually it’s whatever I’m working on at the moment – I have good (and expensive) taste.  If you’ve been following the last few posts, I’ve added some lovely things to the stash that absolutely could turn into a favorite….

5.) Toe Up or Cuff Down?

I’ve not done toe-ups yet.   Probably the next pair will be.

6.) What’s your favorite color (this week or for all time)? Do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can’t stand?

Next to touchable-ness, yarn is about color for me.  I love midnight blue/purple/indigo. I love cool season/blue undertone colors (Winter or Summer).  Now I used to think I didn’t like olive-y greens, but lately I found a few that have changed my mind.  I’ve also been pal-ing around with some visual artists for the last two years that have me seeing color in new ways….

7.) Do you have a pet(s)?

Yes, a pair of beautiful, loveable but dim “Labramatians”, Boris & Natasha, and an enormous antique yet surly cat by the name of Bluto.

8.) Babies: Oven Roasted or Barbecued?

Fully grown and/or belonging to someone else!  This baby farm is closed down as a public service.

9.) Besides socks what is your favorite type of thing to knit?
Mittens have been my favorite thing for about a year; scarves and shawls are coming on strong for next year I think…maybe sooner.

10.) What’s your favorite scent?

Historically, I love the honeysuckle/jasmine/gardenia family, but grapefruit has been the favorite for almost 2 years now.  One spritz just makes me so *happy* all of a sudden.

11.) What music are you really loving right now? Like a song or a band?

Crowded House’s “Temple of Low Men”  has been stuck in my head for 2 weeks, intermingled with John Gorka’s “Land of the Bottom Line”; I’m not sure why.

12.) How many pairs of socks have you hand knit?

Maybe 10 pairs?  I couldn’t really say as I’ve given most of them away, and that was in the days before Ravelry….or even Sanskrit and clay tablets perhaps.

13.) What’s your favorite treat? Salty or Sweet?

Cookies.  Oreos, snickerdoodles, gingersnaps, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter…..mmmmmmmmmmmm  Homemade or store bought, my depredations are widespread and democratic.

14.) What was the most interesting thing you smelled yesterday. Not good or bad necessarily, just the thing that stuck out most so that you actually took notice of it.

It’s really too disgusting to say here.  Fortunately, I had a candle to disperse the noxious stench.

15.) Needles – DPN’s: Wooden, metal or plastic?

I do not like plastic needles… all. Oh I’ve tried – it would be better for the budget certainly, but just no way.  I think the thinner the yarn, the more I like wooden ones.  Otherwise, gimme some circs!  I just discovered the joy of Addi Turbo lace needles.

16.) What is your favorite sock pattern that you’ve knit? What do you recommend?

Aurelia by Elizabeth Manning.  Interesting to do, wonderful result, well written and to top it all off – it’s free.  Why knitters aren’t making these by the thousands, I’ll never know.

17.) The last Question: If you were stuck on a deserted island who would you want with you, what knitting would you want with you and would you ever want to leave?

I think I would want my friends Tangela and Adrienne. They are some of the most interesting people I know, I adore them  and @#$% can they sing! plus they let me hang around with them.

I would want to bring whatever knitting that they would like to receive, so that they’ll continue to let me sing with them, and we would probably never leave.

Yet another one….

I’ve seen this one around…finally got tagged fer it meself.  I promise – this’uns the last one until after the weekend.

I met an LJer and a meme

On the way home from my all too short weekend with my parents in Virginia, I managed to give one of my Pay It Forward gifts to the recipient in person!

allowed me to come and meet her at her workplace for a few minutes, and it was lovely.  I made a Tudora for her out of some rather delicious Mountain Colors yarn – my mother was so taken with it that we had to go to a yarn shop in Roanoke to get the yarn to make one for her (out of some Claudia’s Handpainted yarns in “Plumalicious”).  I’m sorry – no pictures since I am still w/o a digital camera.

But I love the Tudora – easy to make, unique, easily custom sized and useful – even for somebody like me with hardly any neck.  I’ll be making more of these…..

A cute little meme taken from

A couples meme

Stolen from Sassy:

1. How long have you been together? 20 years.  I cannot believe it really.

2. Who pursued who? Neither. It’s amazing we are together AT ALL.  Gad really was the one who put us together I think.

3. Do you wear any type of wedding/commitment ring? If so, which hand? Plain gold band on the “wedding” finger -yes, both of us.

4. What was the hardest thing about learning to live together? Sleeping in the same bed for me.  I still prefer sleeping by myself, whereas he can’t sleep well without me.

5. Who takes longer to get ready in the morning? I do.  I am not fussy about hair & makeup, but I take a while to really wake up.  Unless one of the kids needs something….

6. Do you usually eat breakfast together? On Sundays.  He gets up very early for work (he doesn’t have to, but he prefers it) and though I do like the morning light, I wake slowly…..

7. Do you ever share clothes? When I was not too fat to do so!.  he sometimes will wear my jackets (as I said, I’m not very girly).

8. Who does most of the cooking? Me, and I am SICK OF IT.  Though, to be fair, he cooked tonight and it was good AND he made both an entree and a side; it’s new and uncharted territory for Mr. Bill.

9. Who usually takes out the trash? Whomever notices.  Probably me cos I’m home more than he is.

10. If you have pets who usually does litter box or poop patrol? He does, thank God.  It doesn’t bother him the way it does me.  I can do it if I have to, but if he is around I don’t even have to ask him. Now THAT”S wonderful.

11. Which one of you is more likely to answer the phone when it rings? Me. He hardly ever answers the phone.

12. Who’s in charge of the remote if you’re watching TV together? Bill mostly.  I almost never watch TV.  But if it’s a show I want to watch, that remote is mine; I don’t want anybody flipping around on the commercials.  Just leave it there already!

13. Who usually drives when you go out together? He does cos he hates they way I drive.  I don’t like the way he drives either, but I am far better able to stand it than he, and I can always knit.

14. Which one of you takes care of spiders and bugs that get into the house? Either of us.  Not too squeamy about the crawlies.

15. Facing the bed, who sleeps on which side? If I’m on the right, he’s on the left.  We have switched for years at a time though.

16. Who usually checks the (postal) mailbox? Me.  I’m home, I order stuff thru the mail and do swaps, plus I’m from the country and mail is a big deal.

17. If something breaks or goes wrong in the house, which one of you is more likely to either fix it or call someone to fix it? We’re both fixers, though we are now to the point where we have more money than time so we sometimes have to call someone.

18. Who is generally the neater of you? ME! But I have more stuff so its hard to tell.

19. Who handles the checkbook/pays the bills? I have for almost the whole time we have been together, but when my brain went wonkier and wonkier, we had to re-tool.  Now we do it togther, and we are automating a good bit of it and that is the best part.

20. What was your last fight/disagreement about? It’s hard to say because we kind of bicker a good bit of the time according to one of Bill’s sisters.  Hey – if we didn’t bicker we’d hardly say anything to each other!  No, the last time I got irritated with him was this morning when I was driving to & from the post office.  He kept on announcing the speed limits everywhere we went because he thought I was driving too fast.  I told him I already have a conscience and I don’t need another one, plus I have a life and he’d better get one so he’ll have something else to think about when I drive.

21. When you slow dance together, who leads? Dancing is not something my husband does, really.

22. What do you love the most about your other half? The fact that 1) he still makes me laugh and will laugh at my jokes, and 2) he tries to do what I ask him to almost always to show his love for me.  He’s not so fab with the words of love, but great with actions

Back in country

OK, now everybody repeat after me:

“The Atlanta airport is evil!”

C’mon – I can’t hear you!

Thank you – that’s much better.  I promise to write more (and actually postive) remarks about what I’ve been doing for the last 10 days, but for right now, I’m sitting at my folks house in Virginia being a slug in Pj’s all day, listening to this which I enjoy occasionally
and tryna catch up with a few things.

Photographer extraordinaire

[info]lysistrata had this on her lj

and I’m stealing it.  It’ll take me at least til tomorrow to compile the movie quotes.  In the meantime, go to her lj and read it.

1. Pick 15 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDB and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search or other search function

What privileges do you have?

I find this really interesting. I guess in our culture we tend to ignore how much we have, especially when we are children; since we haven’t gotten *everything* we wan, we feel deprived. So I have bolded the things that were true for me during my upbringing, and of course made comments here and there….

4. Mother finished college
