Christmas

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Now let’s do something else that’s meaningful.

Is everybody good? Fat n’ happy?   Coming down from the high (pie-induced) of Christmas?

Remember this book? So sweet.

Good.

I asked Studmuffin to write a family update (read last year’s here), and he did think of some things to say, but would not SHARE. Hmpf. Now he & the Force of Nature are in West Virginia visiting Grandmamma – the Duke of Curl & I have to work. So I guess no funny letter for 2013.

So this noontime I’ve been paying bills and sending $ donations to our favorite charity – Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders.  Some years ago, Grandmamma started giving a donation to Catholic Charities instead of giving us Christmas gifts; a change I welcomed! Goodness knows I keep us well-supplied with mountains of stuff….  Studmuffin has 5 siblings and several of them send us lovely things – pears, cookies, meats & cheeses – every year for Christmas. We don’t do it every year, but when we do give something, we give a donation in their honor to a charity we like. In the past, we chose:  CARE, Habitat for Humanity & Direct Relief.

We like to use different ones – not that we give huge amounts (I wish!).  There is SO MUCH need and giving money to these VERY worthy organizations adds much meaning to this season for me.

Stepping up now

I encourage you to do the same!  We chose  Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders because they are working in all those places you hear about in the news where TERRIBLE things are happening.   You can let all that stuff make feel powerless, guilty, cynical and depressed OR you can give some scratch; the choice is all yours.   And they are doing AMAZING work – even if you don’t/won’t/can’t give, take a little time and read some of the blog posts from the volunteers and patients. LOOK HERE.  It will do you good, I promise!

::::STEPPING DOWN NOW::::

Not much knitting is happening because of the KITTEN.  She is loads of fun and FEROCIOUS.  I’ll tell much more about her in a later post. But I do promise actual knitting photos soon….and gardening stuff too!  I know – you gotta SIT DOWN because of all the EXCITEMENT…..

Have a terrific 2014 everyone. Lemme hear from you at some point. 🙂

A weekend wrap-up

So since my brain is fried & I must finish some audio editing, here is the skinny on what’s been happening here at Chez Oney:

  • had to pay No. 1 son’s rent again, so I was left with very little money.  I couldn’t go to Nashville and sing with New Jubilee and so no caroling happened. Poopies.
  • My dad has been SMOKE FREE for 3 weeks!  It’s a bloomin’ miracle!
  • Both the Duke of Curl & the Force of Nature had some funny little illness this weekend. The Duke of Curl is home today from school because his face had this grey look that was a little bit alarming & certainly not good for going to school.
  • I may have a touch of what they’ve had. I slept a LOT this weekend & I have almost zero motivation to do anything today.  Of course it’s also little chilly & grey & rainy out and that could be it. Plus it’s Monday.
  • I’m gonna get a podcast out BEFORE the end of the week. Stop laughing please.
  • I have just 3 rows left on my shawl. NOTE TO SELF: No more KALs in the 4 months before Christmas……
  • I made really delicious Scalloped Potatoes last night.  For most people, this would not be a blog-worthy topic HOWEVER I have tried & tried all different kinds of recipes over the last 20+ years and not ONE of them turned out any good. But NOW I can do it!  Yay!  Believe me – this is a victory!
  • Planning on learning Entrelac with Sarah in January.Time to add a new skill to the knitting rep.

Doesn’t this look really groovy? And difficult? I think it looks like FUN!

  • Book writing is slow.  I may have to go to the library everyday to get this sucka done.
  • I need to wrap a few Christmas presents today. It will be a small Christmas but that’s dandy with me. I’m **really** pleased with the gifts for Studmuffin.
  • I bought the last yarn I’m gonna buy for the next 2 years.  OK, I really mean it STOP laughing!  I need encouragement not giggles

That’s all for now folks. God willing, a podcast & show notes will be occupying this space very soon. Wish me luck!

I got this from the fabulous blog of Smariek Knits:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper
2. Real tree or Artificial? Usually none, and the Force of Nature will draw one on paper and tape it to the piano. However this year I have a sour orange tree that lives outside during the warm weather and now it’s inside. The Force of Nature has decided it is suitable, has hung several ornaments on it and pronounced it our Christmas tree.
3. When do you put up the tree? N/A
4. When do you take the tree down? N/A
5. Do you like eggnog? yes, but only the homemade non-alcoholic kind. Studmuffin and the kids like storebought…which tastes like glue to me.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? Probably the Laura Ingalls Wilder books my grandmother gave me every year.
7. Hardest person to buy for? Studmuffin; he doesn’t really *get* the whole gift giving thing…..
8. Easiest person to buy for? The kids.
9. Do you have a nativity scene? No.
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? A few of both
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? The year I got absolutely no gifts for my birthday or Christmas (my birthday is on the 13th) from husband or kids….after busting my but to do everything for everyone else.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? It’s a 4 -way tie: The Bishop’s Wife (with Cary Grant), Holiday Inn (which I hardly ever get to see), Muppets Christmas Carol(if you haven’t seen it, you MUST!), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (with Jim Carrey). I only saw that last one 2 years ago and I just adore it. Bill Murray’s Scrooged is a close runner up; Bobcat Goldthwait is SO funny in this movie….
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Whenever I see something that I think will serve, but we do Christmas pretty small so usually the bulk of the presents shopping is done about a week before. Shopping for the Christmas dinner takes much more time.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Oh yes. I would much rather give a gift to someone else who will love it than to store it unused in my all-too-cluttered house or throw it away (Horrors!).
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Christmas cookies.
16. Lights on the tree? No.
17. Favorite Christmas song? That changes just about daily with me! See the last two posts for a sampling.
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Staying home.
19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Of COURSE! Dasher Dancer Prancer Vixen Comet Cupid Donner Blitzen and Rudolph….though I love the Ray Stevens’ song “Santa Claus is Watchin’ You” where he renames the reindeer: Bruce Marvin Slick Clyde Doright and Leon.
20. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? In the morning. Growing up we always did it Christmas Eve which I prefer, but Studmuffin insists upon the morning so….
21. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? The hysterical crazy over commercialization of Christmas in the U.S. Last year I was in British Columbia for a few days before Christmas and it was really really nice and relaxed…even charming. If it wasn’t so cold, I might emigrate.
22. Favorite ornament theme or color? I love snowflakes.
23. What do you want for Christmas this year? Peace on earth
24. Angel on the tree top or a star? Neither
25. Favorite Christmas dinner? One I do not personally have to cook. :o)
